Water polo youth teams struggle at Pan Ams

The two Trinidad and Tobago water polo teams suffered disappointing results at the Pan Am Youth Water Polo Championships that concluded in Jamaica yesterday.
The girls squad finished sixth and last in the competition, while the male team ended in ninth spot out of a possible 10 teams, both sides failing to qualify for the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships to be hosted in Podgorica, Montenegro from August 26-September 3 next year.
The female team failed to win a single game and suffered heavy defeats from the opening day on August 27 when Brazil shocked them 37-7. That was followed by another big margin loss to Canada (35-6) on August 28.
The following day, the USA hacked them 27-4 before Mexico thumped them 27-7 on August 30.
Their closest match in the round-robin format was a 17-14 result with Puerto Rico on August 31, the other team that struggled in the competition.
And in the fifth and sixth playoff between those two bottom teams, Puerto Rico edged T&T 11-9 to relegate the T&T female squad to last place.
In the male competition, T&T completed the round A group stage in fifth and last spot in the grouping that included USA , Puerto Rico, Colombia and Argentina.
Colombia humbled them 21-12 on August 27, while USA whipped the T&T outfit 21-8 on August 28.
On August 29, they battled to a 15-10 defeat to Puerto Rico while Argentina outscored them 23-15 on Monday.
And in the ninth and tenth place match between the Group A and Group B cellar placed teams, T&T defeated hosts Jamaica 15-9 to avoid last spot.
The competition concludes today with the medal matches.
