Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said Tobago could provide a good model for the 14 regional corporations in Trinidad.
The Prime Minister, who addressed the Tobago House of Assembly at a Special Sitting arranged at the Assembly Legislature in Upper Scarborough earlier
today, described the THA as a success story.
“A major part of our election promise in the recent campaign was to bring greater autonomy to the 14 local government units in Trinidad and holding out to them
that if we do that those units can function like Tobago,” Dr. Rowley said.
“Even in the absence of internal self-government, the management of Tobago’s affairs is far superior than any other unit in the country,” Rowley stated.
“…And as a result of that, where responsibility is given to the people in the local community to manage your affairs at the local level, that the quality of life in Tobago, I dare
say is far better than most areas in Trinidad and Tobago.”
The sitting was part of the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to Tobago, which began on Friday and ends today with a cocktail event hosted by Chief Secretary Orville
London in Dr. Rowley’s honour.
