THE Office of the Prime Minister needs to give the public a full explanation as to why there was need to purchase a new Mercedes Benz for official use during a time when Government is asking the public to be more financially prudent.
This is according to political leader of the Movement of Social Justice (MSJ) David Abdulah who was speaking at a press conference yesterday at MSJ's headquarters at St Joseph Road, San Fernando.
He said while he did not know all the details surrounding the purchase of the vehicle, there must be transparency and accountability.
The Express reported that a new Mercedes-Benz S-Class was purchased for the official use of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and that the cost was $2 million. Speaking at a function on Sunday in Port of Spain, Rowley said the cost of the vehicle was $900,000, a “fantastic price for a very good vehicle”. The purchase of the vehicle comes before Finance Minister Colm Imbert's presentation to the Parliament this Friday on the country's economic status.
“The Office of the Prime Minister should make a very clear and factual statement,” Abdulah said.
He added that there should not be so much focus on the purchase of the vehicle so as to divert attention from the real issues which included good governance.
