Firestorm over IRO’s child marriage position*

THE position taken by the Inter Religious Organisation (IRO) in defence of child marriages has ignited a social media firestorm, with a petition being started calling for legislation that would make it illegal.
Many have signed in support of the petition, entitled “End Child Marriages In Trinidad and Tobago Now”, with more than 900 people signing by mid-afternoon yesterday.
The petition appealed to viewers to end marriages involving people under 16 years old.
There has been widespread outrage in response to yesterday’s Express report, in which the head of the IRO, Brother Harrypersad Maharaj, defended the right of a Muslim girl to marry at age 12, and a Hindu girl to marry at age 14.
