VETERAN masman Stephen Derek died yesterday after suddenly falling ill while working at his home in Woodbrook.
According to a relative, Derek was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, but shortly after his arrival, doctors informed his family they could do nothing to save his life.
Upon hearing of Derek’s death, members of his band, D’Midas International, flocked to the mas camp in Woodbrook to extend condolences to his family and mourn his passing.
Derek was born in 1952, in Buller Street, Woodbrook, not far from George Bailey’s mas
camp where he spent a lot of time as an apprentice to the iconic designer.
Derek started his own band, D’Midas Touch, in 1978 and produced Carnival bands throughout the world.
In 1972, Derek was presented with the Hummingbird Medal (Silver) for his contributions in the development of Carnival.
