AG bringing laws to deal with 'fake news' spreaders*

Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi

Persons using social media to spread false information on crimes, or other content to cause panic and fear among the public, will soon have to answer to the law.
Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi yesterday said important amendments to the Cybercrime Bill have been made, taking into account the spread of information on social media.
The bill will be taken to Cabinet this week.
He was speaking at a conference hosted by the Association of Real Estate Agents (AREA) at the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, Richmond Street, Port of Spain.
The AG lamented that some persons were using social media to satisfy their thirst for blood, scandal and “horrible” imagery without regard for the persons affected.
Often-times, he said, the information is determined by the police to be false.
