Chris Garcia wins Ultimate Chutney Challenge

Chris Garcia

HAVING a rough day? If Chris Garcia's “I Like Mehself” doesn't turn your frown upside down, call the doctor - you may need to make sure you have a pulse. The comical feel-good song comes courtesy the man whose break-out song “Chutney Bacchanal” became a mega hit back in 1996.

The song's accompanying video showing Garcia, bareback and with long locks, gyrating to the chorus made him an overnight sex symbol. Garcia is still rocking the long hair but the message of “I Like Mehself” has very little, or perhaps nothing to do with wooing the ladies, and everything to do with positivity.

For those who know Garcia well, it's no surprise that the singer who describes himself as a “fun-loving, happy guy” chose to write a song about being positive. In an interview with the Sunday Mix a couple days after winning the Ultimate Chutney Challenge at the Chutney Soca Monarch at Skinner Park, San Fernando, Garcia explains why “I Like Mehself” has special meaning for him and why he's a happier man now than he was years ago at the height of his success.

“I made this song for people to feel good about themselves and judging from the online comments, I could tell that people are really enjoying it. Just looking at the seven o'clock news and the craziness that's happening made me realise that the country needs a song like this. After Carnival I'll be doing everything in my power to make sure it goes to every part of the world,” Garcia says.

“I Like Mehself” is a reminder to listeners not to take themselves too seriously and for three minutes and 29 seconds, it offers a brief respite from all the negative news the public has gotten used to hearing and reading about.
