A queen of the kings’ sport *

Changing times: Traditionally the “sport of kings”, more women are taking up falconry.


 

THE main attractions at Asa Wright Nature Centre, in Trinidad's Northern Range, might be those with wings and feathers, but over the years the centre has opened its doors to visitors from all over the world with personalities, lives and professions as colourful and interesting as the winged creatures that flit and flutter around the centre.

Among those fascinating personalities was licensed master falconer Debbie Tennyson, a trained professional in the art of ­falconry—a sport that originated in medieval times. If you're anything like me, you're probably wondering: what is falconry?
