Long-awaited Welch health report is in: Children’s facility a fact of life

AT A STANDSTILL: The Couva Children’s Hospital which was commissioned by former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in August 2015.

THE rationale for the controversial $1.5 billion Couva Children's Hospital, constructed under the former People's Partnership administration, remains unclear to the team set up to review it.

The recommendation, however, is that the hospital be utilised.

“We are unaware of the justification for a hospital facility of that nature at that location and wait to be guided in that respect. That being said, it is the unpleasant task to seek to rationalise the subsequent use. But the facility is a fact of life and has to be utilised in some way,” was the recommendation from the committee chaired by Dr Winston Welch.
