Farewell to child marriage *

I congratulate our Members of Parliament for unanimously passing the bill to raise the minimum age for marriage to 18. That makes us leaders in at least one aspect of child rights in the Caribbean region.

We have now done what India did in 1978 when it passed the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Act, which raised the minimum age of marriage to age 18 for women and age 21 for men, thereby amending the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, which then had minimum ages of 18 and 15 years for boys and girls respectively.
