GATE challenges *


The recent announcement by Education Minister Anthony Garcia of adjustments to the Government Assistance Tuition Expenses (GATE) programme has caused quite a stir in the national arena as it raises many questions as to the rationale and implications of some of the changes.

While it is understandable that continuing students should be allowed to complete their programmes, it does seem unfair to those who “missed the boat” by dint of their age or the year they opted to undertake tertiary education.

It is also unfortunate that citizens over 50 years of age have been completely left outside the GATE. There has already been a public outcry against this policy which has been viewed as discriminatory.
