Woman sets herself on fire, dies six days later

Died at hospital: Stevelin Taylor


A 22 year old Moruga woman with mental health issues died last week after setting herself on fire near the family's home.

Stevelin Taylor, of Sixth Company, Indian Walk, spent six days at hospital before she succumbed to her injuries.

A police report stated that at around 2.20 p.m. on August 4 her uncle Lynton Jointe was at his home when he heard screams. Upon checking he saw his niece in a yard opposite his home engulfed in flames.

Jointe extinguished the flames and Taylor was taken to the Princes Town District Health Facility.

She was transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where she was warded in the Intensive Care Unit.

However, she died on August 10.

A post mortem conducted at the San Fernando mortuary found that death was due to multiple organ failure.

Police said the death has been classified as suicide. 

Police said she was a patient of the psychiatric clinic of SFGH.
