Determined to save her son, a 71-year-old mother stood between him and his attacker during a fight outside her home on Saturday.
Dhanrajiyia Thompson, of Lachoos Road, Penal, suffered a broken forearm and chops to the left shoulder as she tried to wrestle a cutlass from the hands of a close male relative.
But in the end, she failed to save the life of her son, Paul Mark Teeluck, who was brutally chopped about the body.
When police arrived at the scene, Teeluck was lying unresponsive at the back of the house around 5.30 p.m.
His attacker was bandaging the elderly woman’s arms.
Teeluck, 27, died two hours later at Siparia District Health Facility.
His mother, a pensioner, remains in stable condition at San Fernando General Hospital.
The 38-year-old relative was taken into police custody.
