A laudable initiative*

It is uplifting to see focused and professional attention being paid to the needs of disabled children and their families. Though it may be far from adequate, a multi-partner initiative launched on Monday at the Mt Hope Women’s Hospital must communicate comfort to the thousands of families who daily face numerous challenges in caring for children with physical and mental disabilities.
The State, in spite of burgeoning funding for the social sector, has had an embarrassingly poor track record of attending to the special needs of such families beyond a small monthly disability grant. Parents, guardians, caregivers and teachers burdened by related challenges and uneducated in care of the disabled, have been the subjects of news stories about sordid abuse of those requiring special facilities and specialist medical interventions.
