...shots fired as cops stage rescue

Police officers on the scene.

A MAN allegedly held a female student hostage and shot at police officers at MIC Technology Centre in O'meara, Arima on Monday morning.

Police say the suspect released the girl and surrendered to police after more officers responded.

The girl was unharmed, police said, and a search is on for the suspect's gun.

Witnesses told police that at around 9 a.m. a man confronted the female student over a domestic situation outside the gates of the learning institution.

The girl contacted police and when they responded, the suspect allegedly held them in a standoff on the road.

The man allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire on the police officers.

He then ran into the school and allegedly held the girl at gun point.

The hostage situation lasted about 15 minutes, witnesses said.

The suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody by officers of the Arima CID.

Police are searching students and the school premises for the firearm.
