DERRON DOUGLAS and Shreya Maharaj will attempt to pick up from where they left off two weekends ago when the Tobago Open Table Tennis Championship serves off today at Scarborough Secondary.
Both captured the under-15 and 18 titles in the National Junior Championships and they will be going after the double again.
Last year’s national under-13 champion Douglas is a clear favourite in the under-15 division, but several players are capable of lifting the under-18 crown.
Although Luc O’Young was stunned by Douglas in the quarterfinals of “Nationals”, this year’s Caribbean age-group runner-up is still the one to beat.
Carenage Blasters’ teammates Jesse Dookie and Matthew Mootra, runner-up in the under-18 and 21 divisions of “Nationals”, respectively, are the others main contenders. The Blasters trio will also be going after the under-21 crown, but they will have to watch out for Tobagonian Shaquille Mitchell and defending Benoni Daniel.
Maharaj, who won four titles in “Nationals”. has been crowned national under-15 champ for the last three years and seems to be tied by the post here.
The explosive southpaw is also the under-18 favourite after whipping arch-rival Chelsea Fong for this title two weeks ago.
