The trouble with devaluation *


OKAY, let's start with Suriname. Like us, they're a Caribbean minerals-based economy that doesn't depend on tourism.

Like us, they hit recent trouble.

Their big bauxite mine closed in 2015. Back in 2005, bauxite and its processed product, alumina, brought in one quarter of government revenue. From two years ago, that was down to zero.
