Dark Divali: Flood waters still rising

The flooded service station in Gasparillo.

It was a dark Divali for many Hindus across the country as flood waters swamped homes and left some roadways impassable.

And the overnight rainfall caused more flooding in parts of Central and South Trinidad  this morning leaving some families marooned in their homes.

Parts of Barrackpore, Penal, Debe, Williamsville, Gasparillo and Freeport are now under water.

The Express was told that regional corporations have been mobilised and are assisting affected families.

Many of the families were still recovering from last month's flooding when the rains returned. Farmers have also suffered severe losses.

Areas along the Solomon Hochoy highway were also flooded and motorists have been advised to exercise extreme caution.

The Meteorological Office has also advised that sea conditions are expected to worsen today.
