Floods, landslides in South, Central *

24 hours of torrential rain...

THE forecast on Wednesday, the Divali holiday, was for rainfall and the possibility of flash floods, but few expected more than 24 hours of torrential rain that flooded homes and roads, and triggered landslides and evacuations across South and Central Trinidad.

And the flooding was expected to worsen overnight, with the Meteorological Service predicting rain into this afternoon.

Families awoke yesterday to find their homes surrounded by water, and some schools were dismissed early as the Meteorological Service predicted more rainfall.
