AT least 600 residents of Mayaro were marooned yesterday as flood waters gushed into the streets and their homes from the burst banks of the Mafeking, Ortoire and Navet rivers.

The waters flooded the Naparima/Mayaro Road, effectively cutting off access from the east.

The only way out was through the Manzanilla/Mayaro Road which the Ministry of Works last night cautioned drivers about using.

The flooding was expected, Member of Parliament for Mayaro Rushton Paray had said on Friday, due to the increased volume of rainfall over the past week, leading to riverine flooding.
