Workers rescue children from burning house *

'Right place, right time': Tevin Straker, from left, Rossi Gunpat and Jerome Hassanali spotted a fire at a house in Mayaro and were able to get four children out before it was destroyed. The children were not injured, but two of their pet dogs died.


A routine drive from their jobsite to the company's office in Guayaguayare turned into a rescue mission for four men on Wednesday.

Tevin Straker, an employee of Southern Maintenance Services Ltd, was driving along an oilfield road off Naparima/Mayaro Road in Mayaro, when he noticed a house on fire.

Straker said he drove past the house but stopped suddenly when his co-worker, Jerome Hassanali, shouted out there were children in the house.

The incident occurred around 11.30 a.m.
