The man named as the driver of the car which ploughed into a Penal couple on Sunday night is known to police.

Investigators are now searching for the man who had been charged in the past for criminal offences.

The driver's identity was revealed in a police interview with the owner of the white Nissan Tiida car.

The 40-year-old woman was released on Wednesday.

Police said they were satisfied that the teacher was not behind the wheels when Khemchan Roopnarine and his wife, Patricia Harripersad, were struck by the vehicle. Their two young sons were close by but survived.

The woman told police that a male friend had borrowed the vehicle that day. He returned the damaged vehicle without an explanation, she said.

Police went to the woman's house on Monday and impounded the car. She was also taken into custody.

Investigators have gathered information on the driver and are expected to make an arrest soon, the Express was told.
