Bakr loses lawsuit against magistrate

Jamaat-al-Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr now has to fork out $14,000 of his own money to pay the State's legal costs after a lawsuit he filed against a magistrate for malicious prosecution was dismissed at the Port of Spain High Court yesterday.

Even though Justice Frank Seepersad said he found there was no legal justification for Abu Bakr's arrest and incarceration for the 1998 murder of Maraval resident Israel Sammy, the judge said he could not award any damages since Abu Bakr's claim was not properly structured.

In September 2010, following an inquest at the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court, Magistrate Nalini Singh, acting in the capacity of coroner, found there was sufficient evidence to charge Abu Bakr and another man, Brent “Big Brent” Miller, with Sammy's murder.
