HIV-positive man convicted of raping infant

SIXTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD retiree Conrad Matthias cried after the jury found him guilty of raping a five-year-old child.

The girl, who is now a teenager, testified against him.

It was the State's case led by attorney Sarah De Silva that Matthias told the girl she could not go to the parlour with her mother and his two children. She was left behind and was sexually assaulted in his bedroom.

The prosecution called the child and her mother as a prosecution witnesses. The mother was hesitant to answer question posted by De Silva. The attorney deemed her a hostile witness during her testimony. 

Matthias, who the jury heard has the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, exercised his right not to take the stand or call witnesses.

They jury took approximately an hour to return the guilty verdict. 

Matthias will be sentenced on December 6.
