“Dey make ah out dey man, ah big out,” my friend said angrily. A lot of other people said it was an outrage and one even called it an out-and-out attempt to hold the country to ransom. “They had to be out of their minds,” someone else exclaimed. “Is not just the taps and toilets in the airport that out of order, is immigration too,” complained another. They were all referring to a form of industrial action known as a “sick out” supposedly taken by immigration officers at the Piarco Airport on Sunday, November 12 when only two officers came out to deal with what is said to have been “about two thousand people” or a thousand times the number of immigration officers available to process them like sardines in a can.
