Maritime industry missing out on $$ millions*


Tremendous opportunities abound for Trinidad and Tobago’s maritime sector but successive Governments have done very little to boost the sector to allow it to reach its full potential, says general manager of the Shipping Association of Trinidad and Tobago Joanne Edwards.
Citing an example, Edwards said T&T could be raking in millions of dollars in foreign exchange from ship-to-ship transfers of commodities such as bauxite, iron ore and oil, but several months ago this operation was suddenly shut down.  “Ship-to-ship transfer is very lucrative and is a huge foreign exchange earner and yet they have shut it down by refusing to facilitate it by not granting the approval of application.
