CSO seeks to clarify ‘Express Business’ story*

Last week, the acting director of statistics, Sean O’Brien, sought to clarify some data in the article in the November 22 edition of Express Business headlined ‘CSO’s contraction estimate way off.’ One key point made by Mr O’Brien is that the -2.3 per cent estimate of gross domestic product for T&T in 2016 was arrived at by the Central Statistical Office in July 2016 for the six-month period January to June 2016. It should be noted that no lesser person than Minister of Finance Colm Imbert used the -2.3 per cent figure in delivering the mid-year budget review on May 10, 2017. And Prime Minister Keith Rowley, speaking at the Spotlight function on September 27, 2017, said the decline in the economy for 2016 was “almost -3 per cent.”
