Raffique Shah’s column in the Express of November 28 is commendable, but I am in total disagreement with the headline, “A time to kill”, and his suggestion that if the armed forces cannot quell a riot, then the leaders and instigators of the said riot who are leading it should be killed.
My brother Shah concluded his commentary by stating: “Lock them up, I say. And if they persist, shoot the leaders and instigators. Bet we’d see a dramatic drop, if not a complete elimination, of such unacceptable behaviour.” I give a polite reminder to our frightened citizens that all over the civilised world the protective services use tear gas, powerful water hoses and rubber bullets. The penalty for rioting is not death by execution by the “armed forces”.
