Tis the season for the birds*

Ringed Kingfisher surveys the changing conditions of the swampland.


As I perch on the wires that criss-cross this part of Nariva, I take my bird’s eye view of the territory, a swampscape that’s changing before my very eyes. Being a Ringed Kingfisher Ceryle Torquata has its advantages and disadvantages. I usually benefit from the flooded conditions of the swamp every November when there’s a surplus of water here and sustenance is bountiful. This is the time when I have a vast area to feed, unlike when the water is drying out and I am forced to the limit of the banks along the man-made channels.
