THE last two weeks witnessed two internal elections, first in the Congress of the People (COP), and then in the United National Congress (UNC). After much controversy, the COP elections were finally held on November 19. The controversy involved a legal challenge to the chairmanship of Jamieson Bahadur which was later withdrawn. The candidacy of Nicole Dyer-Griffith was also questioned. She hoped to challenge Sharon Gopaul-McNicol and Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan for the leadership position. Ms Dyer-Griffith had left the party to form her own and concerns were raised as to her eligibility to re-join the party and contest the elections. After a bitter battle in court her candidacy was declared invalid.
