Animal Advocate Auguste*

“THAT’S a tufted coquette,” says Yosanna Auguste in response to a question posed by a visitor to the Asa Wright Nature Centre. Auguste and the woman who has journeyed all the way from the US are bent over an SLR camera looking intently at the screen and inspecting dozens of photos that were taken of the birds flitting and fluttering around the grounds of this wildlife sanctuary. They pause occasionally to marvel over the beauty of the tufted coquette with its golden red crown and black polka-dot rufous plumes at the sides of its neck. Overhead the hummingbirds are so close, you feel as if you can reach out and touch them—if only they weren’t so flighty and agile.
