Cases of violence against women and girls continue to go underreported. That's according to Dr Agatha Carrington, Secretary of Health, Wellness and Family Development who said greater awareness is needed on the issue of domestic violence. She said only eight cases were reported so far this year in Tobago, of which six involved female victims. And Dr Carrington believes the figures don't provide an accurate picture of the issue. “Many of the cases of domestic violence, violence against our women, continue to be covered up; they're not spoken about, they're not reported,” Carrington said.

The Health Division is highlighting the issues using the global “16 Days of Activism” campaign, which began on November 25 and ends on December 10. Tobago's Women's Empowerment and Technological Empowerment Centre, will team up with the Division's Gender Affairs Unit to highlight the issue in a series of events in the coming days. Anyone seeking further information can contact the Division at 639-3395 or 639-4646 or find them online at
