THE Christmas season's traditional increase in robberies, which started off in December with a multi-million-dollar cargo heist at Piarco, continued yesterday with the shooting death of a police officer during a robbery in Arouca.

The past week has also seen a rash of daring attacks in which even a popular ice-cream hangout was targeted.

A pair of armed robbers yesterday bore down on the Ellerslie Plaza, Maraval, branch of Haagen-Dazs in broad daylight but were thwarted by one employee's booming screams.

The Express understands from franchise holder Kevin Whiteman, director of operations HD Cafe Ltd, that staff on duty at the branch at the time were deeply shaken by the incident and were offered counselling afterwards.
