A MEDICAL doctor at whose office a dead baby was discovered in a refrigerator, is expected to appear in court charged with manslaughter.
The doctor was rearrested at his office in San Fernando on Wednesday by officers of the Homicide Bureau Region III. Police retrieved the body of the baby boy who had been wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in the freezer section of the refrigerator on July 9.
It would have survived had he been given proper medical care upon his birth, forensic pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov had said. The baby was brought to the doctor's office after the mother gave birth on July 1.
Alexandrov found that the baby died of natural causes but had a 75 percent chance of survival. He said that the infant was 27 weeks of gestation and from his examination it was not stillborn. Police were told that the child's parents – a 22 year old woman and a 23 year old man of Fyzabad – brought the baby to the doctor's office after she gave birth at her mother's home.
The parents had given a statement to the police. The doctor had previously been in custody following the discovery of the baby on the premises of his medical practice.
He was released four days later after his attorneys Subhas Panday and Petronilla Basdeo presented a habeas corpus in the San Fernando High Court.
Homicide detectives took the case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on Tuesday and consulted on the charge to be laid.
