$1 million for hero cop killed in restaurant shootout

Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams, will lead the rank and file of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, in bidding a final farewell to Constable Richard Babwah, who was slain during an attempted robbery at a Chinese restaurant on Monday.

The funeral for Babwah will take place on Friday at the Faith Assembly Church, Five Rivers Junction, Arouca. Babwah, 40, of Lopinot Road, Arouca, was killed when two men attempted to rob a Chinese restaurant, around 5:20pm, on Monday last.

According to the police, in a valiant attempt to defend himself and protect the lives of others, Babwah fired his service revolver, before being fatally shot. He wounded one of the suspects who was later sought medical attention at the Arima District Health Facility.

Three suspects remain in police custody. Babwah, will be honoured with a 21 gun salute, before being cremated at Belgroves Funeral Home and Crematorium in Tacarigua. According to a statement from the Police Service on Thursday, in 2016, Cabinet approved a grant of $1Mn, for the beneficiaries of Regular and Special Reserve Police officers killed in the line of duty.

Babwah, a Special Reserve Police Officer, who had four years' service, leaves to mourn, his mother, father and two daughters. He was attached to the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 2, Arouca.
