Venezuelan bandits rob Trinis to help struggling families

TWO men who have dual citizenship for this country and Venezuela have been sentenced to five years in prison for robbery with violence and possession of gun and ammunition.

Gym instructor and former body builder Gabriel Blake, 22, and Victor Espinoza, 30, who worked with a maintenance company, pleaded guilty before San Fernando senior magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine last Friday.

The two of Chaguanas were arrested in a car near a mall in San Fernando soon after the robbery.

The court heard that officers responded to the robbery where people were beaten at a Palmiste house near San Fernando at 9.55 p.m. on October 26. The getaway vehicle was stopped at C3 carpark and items of jewellery, cell phones, cash and a licenced gun and ammunition which were stolen from the house, were recovered.

Defence attorney Michael Rooplal said his clients had dual citizenship for Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. He said while they were gainfully employed, they committed the offence to be able to support their families, given the situation in Venezuela.

The two were sentence to five years hard labour.

Rooplal who appeared along with Viveka Pargass and Vishan Giwar, plans to appeal the sentence.
