‘Trinis too fat and lazy’*

IDB: Nation among least active in region

THE year 2017 began with Trinidad and Tobago being told by two international agencies it has one of the highest obesity (fat) rates in the hemisphere. The year ended with another agency reporting that Trinidad and Tobago has one of the highest physical inactivity rates (lazy) in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In a Santiago, Chile-stamped release, January 19, 2017, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) said: “The (FAO and PAHO) report also noted obesity affects 140 million people — 23 per cent of the region's population — and that the highest rates are to be found in the Caribbean countries of Barbados (36 per cent) Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, all at around 31 per cent.”

The FAO and PAHO added: “The increase in obesity has disproportionately impacted women: in more than 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, the rate of female obesity is 10 percentage points higher than that of men.”
