Stern test ahead for Lawrence*

Light-heavy faces Guyana’s Shawn Corbin later this month

FACE-OFF: Sheldon Lawrence, left, stares down veteran Nigel “Cow” Edwards prior to their fight last January, which Lawrence won by knockout.

SHELDON LAWRENCE will defend his WBC Fecarbox (Central American Boxing Federation) light-heavyweight title against soon to be 43-year-old veteran Shawn Corbin on January 20 in Georgetown, Guyana.  The Siparia-born Lawrence faces his toughest opponent yet in Corbin, a Guyanese veteran fighting out of Trinidad and Tobago for many years. Corbin (17-5) last tasted competition three years ago when he lost by technical knockout to Briton Nathan Cleverly, the former WBA and WBO cruiserweight world champion.  Corbin, though, has a 2012 victory over Guyana-born, former cruiserweight champion Wayne “Big Truck” Brathwaite.
