Scores of people rushed to apply for discounted land from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) yesterday, the deadline date for submission of applications under the government's Aided Self-Help Housing Programme.

Under the programme, the public can access land at 30 per cent of the market value and receive support and technical assistance to construct their own homes.

The application process was open from November 20 to January 12.

The Express was told a large crowd gathered from early in the morning at HDC Mall, Lisas Gardens, Couva, seeking to submit their last minute applications.

An official said the office would remain open until midnight to facilitate the long lines.

1,000 lots are available for allocation under the first tranche of the programme.
