Rape-accused taxi driver gets bail

Charged: Mahendra Sookhan

A TAXI DRIVER charged with abducting and raping a woman after she allegedly got into his car at around 8 a.m. last week Thursday, has been granted $100,000 bail.

Mahendra Sookhan, 34 of Freeport, appeared before Chaguanas senior magistrate Jo-Anne Connor after he was denied bail by another magistrate on Wednesday.

Sookhan faced six charges including that he took the 32-year-old woman against her will, raped her and committed grievous sexual assault against her at Chickland Village, Freeport. She had allegedly earlier entered his Nissan B14 taxi in Freeport. Constable Avinash Sokhai of the Freeport Criminal Investigations Department laid the charge.

In his bid for bail, defence attorney Taradath Singh told the court that his client had been in custody since Thursday. The matter was prosecuted by Sgt Waithe.

Connor placed Sookhan on $100,000 bail to cover the six charges. He will return to court on February 15.
