AROUND the same time that St Paul's Cathedral was being built in England, construction of the Taj Mahal began in India.
The mausoleum which is located in Agra, in the State of Uttar Pradesh is a UNESCO heritage site and is considered to be one of the wonders of the world.
It is perhaps the most beautiful monument to lost love, even though at the time of my visit, ironically, there were newlyweds waiting to be photographed in front of it.
The man who ordered its construction was Shah Jahan, a Mughal ruler. The Mughals had invaded India and remained in power for a considerable period of time. The Shah had married twice and his wives had not been able to produce an heir. He took a third wife, Mumtaz and they were married for 18 years. She reportedly bore him 14 or 16 children depending on your source of information. It is hardly surprising therefore, that she died in childbirth.
