FOUR-TIME defending champions United States needed lots of nerve and a 3-0 penalty shoot-out victory to see off Caribbean representatives Haiti in yesterday’s first semi-final of the 2018 CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championships at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.
The USA have now qualified for the France 2018 FIFA U20 World Cup and will also play in the CONCACAF final tomorrow against the winners of last night’s second semi-final between Canada and Mexico. Haiti will now play for third spot tomorrow, and another World Cup qualifying spot.
Captain and star Haitian forward Nerilia Mondesir scored two minutes into added-on time to pull 10-man Haiti level at 1-1 in a tough, tough semi-final. It did not look good for the Americans when Haitian goalkeeper Kerly Theus saved the first spot kick from USA striker Sophia Smith.
