Nishard M (Nishard Mayrhoo) and Neval Chatelal are the 2018 Chutney Soca Monarchs. The duo dethroned reigning monarch Omardath Maharaj and took home the $300,OOO first prize with an unstoppable, near-perfect vocal performance of their hit collaboration “Masala”, at the Chutney Soca Monarch final on Saturday night, at Skinner Park, San Fernando.
Performing in position ten, they started their call for unity in extempo style, inviting the small crowd to join their “Chutney Kingdom”, singing interchangeably: “Well friends the time has come/to tell you a story from I was young/about the music of Drupatee/Chris Garcia and uncle Sunny/The Mighty Trini and Ras Shorty I/Sunny Man and Rikki Jai/All over town dey have we winning down low/Rollin we waist, tun up hand like so/Flavour have meh so natural/Chutney in de Carnival.”
