Honouring Cheddi Jagan’s birth*


THE University of Guyana (UG) has announced elaborate arrangements to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of former president Dr Cheddi Jagan who died in office of a heart-related problem on March 6, 1997 at the age of 78.
Once viewed as an enfant terrible of British colonial politics, Jagan was to become, during his first stint in government and after, a victim of successive US administrations. Ironically, Jagan passed away in a US military hospital to which he had been flown from his official residence in Georgetown. Significantly, his death came within six hours of the passing of former Jamaica prime minister, Michael Manley.
