I have been following the less-than-rigorous exchange between Noble Philip and Kumar Mahabir in the letters page of the Express, with respect to the key factors undermining a certain section of the Afro-Trinidadian populace. Both men have approached the issue with racial blinkers, throwing around specious statistics that shed little light on the issue.
Mr Philip is wrong in focusing on poverty as the main cause of problems within the Afro community, however. The core fact is that Afro-Trinidadians broadly match Indo-Trinidadians by all significant measures save one: marriage rates.
According to CSO figures, just over half of all adult Indos are married, as compared to 28 per cent of Afros.
