Short-sighted development*

The shutdown of Caribbean Nitrogen Company (CNC)'s ammonia plant at Pt Lisas by the National Gas Company (­NGC)'s action has been announced in the press as though this is a simple case of the supplier (NGC) playing hard ball with a customer who is reluctant to pay the new asking price. I suspect there is much more to it than this.

As is now well-known, Trinidad and Tobago does not have the amount of gas available to satisfy demand from customers. We allowed a demand to build up amounting to 4.5 bcf/day, and now we can only produce something like 3.5 bcfd.
