Animals have for years, influenced various aspects of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival, from costume design to music. Artist Peter Minshall’s iconic “Hummingbird” and “Man Crab” designs clearly reflect the impact of wildlife on mas.
For years, live animals including snakes have been part of Carnival portrayals including being used by traditional masqueraders. However, today, with the growing concern and awareness for the welfare of animals, this act is highly frowned upon as it is considered a form of cruelty.
