Builders face red sand shortage*

CONSTRUCTION COST UP: Surujrattan Rambachan


Tabaquite MP Surujrattan Rambachan has called on the Government to address a red sand crisis facing the construction sector.

Rambachan, a private housing developer, said small contractors have been unable to access quality red sand for the past months.

His company, Santosh Villas Limited, has been paying up to $1,500 for an eight cubic yards of sand that is inferior to red sand.

Rambachan said the red sand crisis was now driving the cost of construction up. And he noted that the Government would soon find that unless it intervenes its ability to provide affordable housing would be severely affected.
