Gunman tells cops: 'I just wanted to stay alive'

A 23-year-old held by police with a loaded gun on Sunday, told police that due to the ongoing war between the Rasta City and Muslim gangs in Sea Lots and Beetham,  he felt he had no choice but to arm himself to ensure that he stayed alive.

The man from the Sea Lots was arrested on Sunday at the Port of Spain Central Market.

At about 5:30a.m, officers searched and found and seized a .38mm revolver with three bullets. It was tucked away in of the man’s boxer shorts.

The man told officers that he only had the weapon on him to protect himself and that he was not going to commit any criminal acts.

He said the “war” between the two gangs had spiked in recent weeks, with several shootings and homicides reported in the area in January alone.

Despite this, the man was informed that the possession of the loaded firearm was illegal, and that he would be charged.

He is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today.
