'Wet Fete' cancelled after death of sailor

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the death of a T&T Coast Guard sailor at Staubles Bay, Chaguaramas, on Wednesday.

Leading Seaman Deryck Nicholas, 37, succumbed to injuries sustained after falling overboard a Coast Guard vessel at around 9am.

Nicholas was taken to the St James District Facility where he was pronounced dead.

T&T Coast Guard public relations officer Lt Sherron Manswell confirmed the death in a media release.

The Express was informed that the T&T Coast Guard has cancelled its cooler wet fete scheduled for tonight at the Military Museum in Chaguaramas.

“Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard wishes to advise the public that the WetFete has been postponed to a later date due to an accident which claimed the life of a sailor today. We extend deepest condolences to the friends and family of the sailor,” stated a post on social media.

The posted advised that a publication will be made on the rescheduled date.

The T&T Meteorological Office issued a rough seas bulletin this morning advising persons with marine interest to exercise extreme caution.

Rough seas have also forced the Port Authority to cancel the noon sailing of the T&T Express.
